Illegal [Jahangirpuri, Delhi, 20.04.2022]

April 24, 2022

A communal clash between Hindus and Muslims broke out in the suburban Delhi's Jahangirpuri area on 16th April. Although communal clashes, lynchings and mob violence have been a reality of the new India, this incident continued with bulldozer justice as the North Delhi Municipal Corporation  demolished modest dwellings of helpless citizens. The allegation was that: the homes, the 'encroachments' were illegal abodes of rioters and conspirators 'who belong overwhelmingly to one community'*. The demolition, by the way, was against the order of the High Court. Frightened people, mostly belonging to lower income groups, stood watching as their homes and shops were razed to the ground.

I came by the video of a poor woman, helplessly crying and maybe cursing the bulldozer. She represents the 'illegal' in my country, nowadays.

ILLEGAL

The illegal houses

Of the illegal citizens

Belonging to the illegal religion

And the illegal class

Were safely hidden in a country

So legal,

That History has left it

Now, citizens without history

Live with a God

So legal

That he even stands in Elections

God here loves democracy

So, he has a bulldozer

And a time machine,

That converts past into present,

And future into past

Homes made of cardboards

And second-hand fridges,

Shops made of scraps,

Children made of pamphlets,

And women made of

Women

Must be destroyed,

Not with a whimper,

But with a bang

So legal, that

Annihilation seems like salvation.

People are freed

From their own dwellings,

Now the eternal menopause

Of the Metropolitan

Must set in…

The revolution is always illegal,

And a bit late,

Therefore, the people must manage with

An Evolution

So legal,

That it transcends human sciences,

And becomes

An anthem.
